Creative Theories: Thinking and Making [Week 01]

Interior design and architecture employ various theories of thinking and making, guiding the creative process through various viewpoints and methods. There is no single overarching philosophy, but several guiding concepts and ideologies influence how designers and architects approach their work. Some key features of these creative philosophies include:

  • Design thinking is a method of problem-solving that places a strong emphasis on brainstorming, empathy, and prototyping in order to provide creative solutions. Design thinking is a tool that architects and interior designers frequently utilize to comprehend human wants, recognize obstacles, and create innovative solutions that improve a space's use and beauty.
  • Form Follows Function: This idea, which is frequently connected to modernist architecture, states that a building's or interior space's form should be largely determined by its intended use or purpose. It highlights how important utility and efficiency are in design, with the structure's shape developing naturally from its intended usage.
  • Materiality and Craftsmanship: Architectural and interior design are greatly influenced by the selection of materials and the level of craftsmanship employed in building. Certain ideas highlight the senses of touch and material properties, emphasising how these may be used to produce distinctive and beautiful designs.

  • Collaborative Design: A lot of modern ideas stress how crucial teamwork is to the design process. To produce comprehensive and integrated solutions, engineers, architects, interior designers, and other stakeholders collaborate. Working together encourages a multidisciplinary approach by bringing in a range of viewpoints and specialties for the design process.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Design: As environmental challenges get more attention, so does the importance of sustainable design techniques. In architecture, theories of thinking and making frequently take energy efficiency, environmental effect, and the use of sustainable materials into account.
  • Postmodernism and Deconstruction: Several ideologies contest the modernist idea that there is a single, overarching design truth. Deconstruction and postmodernism promote a more varied and eclectic approach that draws from a variety of sources and aesthetics.
From the Department of MA in Interior Architecture and Design at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, I am Md. Arman Alam. When I think back on my own work in interior architecture, I believe that a project should be sustainable and have a design that strikes a balance between cost-effectiveness and space quality throughout. There are steps that must be followed in order to handle interior design properly. These include space planning, concept development, presentation, material selection, construction documentation, and construction management plans.

My MA degree in Interior Architecture and Design has equipped me with specialized knowledge in several areas such as research, policy-making, creative theory formulation, collaboration, presentation, and idea generation. Thus, you have a wide range of alternatives for working with possible employers in the interior design field, including graphic designers, interior design businesses, management companies, creative companies or architectural firms and construction organizations. Last but not least, I wish to support the inner sector of the global economy.
